Names 2008 All-Independent Women’s Basketball Teams
KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Nicole Hayman, a junior guard from Chapman University, heads the All-Independent Women’s Basketball teams announced today by the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I).
The Anaheim Hills, Calif., native, who leads the Panthers to their eighth straight NCAA tournament this weekend, was named the AD3I player of the year. Hayman is averaging 15.6 points per game and has made 42 three-point field goals. She leads the team in scoring, three-point field goals and ranks second in rebounds per contest (3.9). She currently ranks fourth in school history with 971 career points and is the career leader in points per game (17.3). The Panthers have won a school-record 24 games, including a current 12-game winning streak heading into today’s first-round NCAA contest.
The other members of the first team include Julia Fagan (Southern Vermont College), who also was named the rookie of the year; Ruchelle Austin (College of New Rochelle); Lauren Kamiyama (Chapman University); (tie) Emma Buckley (Green Mountain College); Kayleigh Calandri (UC Santa Cruz); and Cara Sczepanski (University of Dallas).
Jen Heath, head women’s coach at Green Mountain College, was named the coach of the year. Heath has turned around an Eagles program that won nine games last year and improved to 17 wins in 2007-08. Green Mountain won the AD3I Women’s Northeast Region Championship with a 64-48 victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth.
The All-Independent Women’s Basketball teams were selected by the women’s basketball coaches from member schools of the Association of Division III Independents.

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 21 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2007-08. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports. In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of 10 other sports this year.
