Overview
The Association of Division III Independents has evolved from an association where the purpose was to provide a unified voice to issues of common concern for independent institutions, to operating more like a conference in terms of offering exempted postseason championship opportunities, and enhanced recognition and stats programs for outstanding independent student-athletes.
In 2010-11, 10 institutions will build on the championships and recognition initiatives we have implemented to enhance and promote the experiences of independent student-athletes. In doing this, we will continue to create a sense of belonging for member institutions and participating student-athletes, and establish a more tangible presence for the association on member campuses.
Our most important initiatives in 2010-11 include:
- Access to Tier One NCAA Strategic Grant Initiatives - Professional Development, Education and Communication - grant monies to offset travel expenses to NCAA Regional Rules Compliance Seminars, FARA Fall Forum, NACWAA Convention, SID meeting, and VP attendance at the NCAA Convention.
- Access to Tier Two NCAA Strategic Grant Initiatives - Social Responsibility and Integration - grant monies for student-athlete well-being, sportsmanship and diversity/gender equity.
- For the eighth year - exempted postseason championship competition is available in women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's golf, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, and softball.
- For the eighth year - sports information and statistical services in seven sports: women's volleyball, and men's and women's soccer (fall); men's and women's basketball (winter); and baseball and softball (spring).
- For the eighth year - All-Independent Team selections in men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball.
- Student-Athletes of the Week, Student-Athletes of the Month and Student-Athletes of the Year recognition program for independent student-athletes.
