Murphy Leads MSOE in Overtime Victory Against Findlandia

Top-seeded Milwaukee School of Engineering men’s basketball team (15-10) scored the first seven points of overtime and came away with a 75-68 victory against No. 4 seed Finlandia University (4-18) in a NCAA Division III Independents Midwest Regional semifinal contest Saturday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders led 30-26 at halftime as both squads shot better than 50 percent from the floor. MSOE took an eight-point lead early in the second half, but the Lions tied the game at 45 with 11:22 left in regulation.

The scored was knotted four more times including Jamel Sabree’s (Milwaukee, Wis.) free throw with 24.7 seconds remaining that sent the game into overtime.

MSOE rattled off seven straight points in the first minute 40 seconds of the extra frame and went up by as many as 10.

Raider junior Scott Murphy (Sheboygan, Wis.) led all players with a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds. Murphy single-handedly outscored the Lions at the foul line as he was 13-of-18 compared to Findlandia’s 8-of-13 performance.

Third-seeded Clarke College (9-17) upset University of Dallas (12-14), 88-76, in the other semifinal Saturday night. MSOE and Clarke will tangle in the title game Sunday at 2 pm, while Dallas and UF will play at noon in the consolation match-up.
