Association of DIII Independents Northeast Men’s Soccer Final Results:

Newbury wins Independent Championship 2 - 0 over U. Maine - Presque Isle

Mitchell wins consolation 5 – 2 over Lincoln University

Newbury College beat University of Maine at Presque-Isle (UMPI) in the Association of Division III Independent Northeast Regional Championship 2-0.  Newbury beat Mitchell College, who was the #3 seed, to reach the championship game.   University of Maine at Presque Isle upset the #1 seed Lincoln University 2-0 Saturday afternoon to reach the final game.

The match was scoreless going into the 2 nd half until Evan Hudson (SO, Sunapee HS) capitalized with a blistering left foot during the 51 st minute on a deep pass from John Mawson (FR, Amherst HS) to put the Nighthawks on the board.  UMPI ( 7-8-1) was still hanging tough giving Newbury goalie Andres Gutierrez (JR, Revere HS, 4 saves) a lot of work with 9 shots in the 2 nd half.  Ari Kazin (FR, Lincoln-Sudbury HS) then saw an opportunity to put the Nighthawks up for good when he dribbled past the defense and scored in the 85 th minute of play.

UMPI’s Matt Petrie (SO, Old Town, ME), who played in field for the 1 st half of the semi-final game and replaced injured starting goalkeeper Scott Clenchy (SO, Saskatchewan) in the 2 nd half of the semifinal  did a phenomenal job for his first collegiate start in goal for the Owls.  Ryan Scott (SR, Quispamsis, NB), Travis Parent (JR, Peru, ME), and Chase Higgins (SO, Presque Isle, ME) were named to the All-Tournament team for UMPI.

Mawson led his Newbury (9-8) team in the first game with 2 goals and an assist.  In the final game he also had an assist.  Also contributing for the Nighthawks were Chad D’Ancona (SO, High Point Reg. HS), Hudson, and Alton Christopher (FR, Dominica HS) who made the All-Tournament team.  D’Ancona was named the Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.

Mitchell Beats Lincoln 5 – 2 in AD3I Men’s Soccer Consolation Game

Mitchell College won the consolation game against the #1 seed Lincoln University 5-2 on a foggy Sunday morning.  Lincoln, who lost to University of Maine at Presque-Isle in the semi-final match, had a tough opponent in the Pequots.  Mitchell, who lost to eventual tournament champion Newbury College in the semi-finals, had a strong offensive showing.

The Pequots took advantage early in the game when Adam Deltgen(FR, Norwich, CT) was fed a ball from co-captain Chris Mackinnel (JR, Branford, CT) to score in the 24 th minute.  The next goal was scored when Josh Griffo (SO, Higganum, CT) was given a direct kick and a Lincoln defender tipped the ball in his own goal.  In the 48 th minute, David Beasley (FR, East Lyme, CT) was given a corner kick that found the foot of Griffo who found the back of the net.  Co-Captain Chris Flaherty(JR, Liverpool, England) decided to get into the scoring mix by netting 2 goals in the 73 rd and 78 th minute of the game.  The first goal came from an assist by co-captain Mackinnel and the second goal came unassisted thanks to the nice footwork of FlahertyDavid Olszewski (JR, Middlefield, CT) did a great job in goal for the Pequots with some spectacular saves, saving 13 balls on 25 shots.

The Lions still were determined to score since they were 5 th nationally in Division III scoring coming into the Tournament.  They scored both of their goals in the final minute of play and separated their goals by 6 seconds.  The first goal came off of the foot of Oluwaseun Ayoola (JR, Kwara, Nigeria) with an assist from Peter Jarbo (SO, Monrovia, Liberia).  Oluwafemi Badejo (SR, Lagos, Nigeria) then gave a pass to Jarbo who wrapped a shot around Mitchell goalie Olszewski.  Badejo and Jarbo are among the highest scoring Division III tandems in the Nation.  The scoring rampage was just a little too late for Lincoln.

Mitchell named both co-captains Mackinnel and Flaherty to the All-Tournament team.   Lincoln named Armah Kamara and Jarbo to the All- Tournament team.
