Mitchell Shutout by Newbury in Independent Semi-finals

Mitchell College, the #3 seed, was defeated by Newbury College, the #2 seed, by a score of 5-0. This was the second semi-final game of the day. The first semi-final game of the day saw the #4 seed, University of Maine of Presque-Isle, upset the #1 seed, Lincoln University (PA), 2-0.

Newbury College (8-8) was led by John Mawson (FR, Amherst HS) with 2 goals and an assist on the day. Ari Kazin (FR, Lincoln-Sudbury HS), Leonard Kavaja (SO, Revere HS), and Jose Neves (FR, Quincy HS) also scored for the Owls. The first goal scored by Kazin was in the 12 th minute from a nice feed from Neves. The 1 st of two goals scored by Mawson was unassisted in the 21 st minute. Right after halftime, Kavaja decided he wanted to get into the mix of scoring when he was fed a ball from Mawson in the 46 th minute. A mere 3 minutes later, Alex Pires (SR, Madison Park HS) had a break away and crossed the ball to Mawson for the 4 th goal of the game for the Owls. Neves scored the final goal in the 68 th minute to put the game out of reach for the Pequots.

Mitchell, which had 24 shots opposed to Newbury’s 18, made numerous attacks towards goal. The Pequots were led by co-captain Chris Flaherty(JR, Liverpool, England) with 7 shots and Josh Griffo( Higganum, CT) with 4 shots. Mitchell (8-11) just could not keep up with Newbury’s strength and speed.

This is the second meeting on the year with Newbury College. The Pequots beat Newbury 2-1 on September 19 th along the Thames River here on the Mitchell campus.

Mitchell will be playing at 11:00 A.M. in the consolation game against the #1 seed Lincoln University followed by the championship game at 1:30 P.M. featuring the #4 seed University of Maine Presque-Isle and #2 seed Newbury College.

Top-seeded Lincoln knocked off in semifinals by fourth-seeded UMPI

NEW LONDON , CT. ( November 5, 2005) -- The fourth-seeded University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls scored a pair of goals in the opening 25 minutes of the game to upset top-seeded Lincoln University, 2-0, in a semifinal match of the Association of Division III Independents Northeast Region Men’s Soccer Championship tournament at Mitchell College Saturday morning.

The fourth-seeded Owls ( 8-8-1) got goals from Trevor Parent in the 11 th minute and Chase Higgins in the 25 th minute to advance to Sunday’s championship game against the winner of the Mitchell-Newbury game at 1:30. The Owls defense handled the rest as they blanked Lincoln, which entered the game ranked fifth in NCAA Division III in scoring. Lincoln ( 8-5-0) will play for third place against the loser of the Newbury-Mitchell game on Sunday morning beginning at 11:00 a.m. This was the first meeting in men’s soccer in school history between Lincoln and UMPI.

Higgins, Gary Mayer and Ryan also did a terrific job in bottling up Lincoln’s high-scoring duo of Peter Jarbo and Oluwafemi Badejo. Both players entered the game with 13 goals and ranked in the top 10 in Division III in points per game and goals per game.

The Owls controlled the opening 35 minutes of the game. At one point, they were out shooting the Lions, 7-2. On UMPI’s first goal, Parent took advantage of a loose ball in front of the net and put home the rebound for a 1-0 UMPI lead. Patrick Rogers recorded the assist on the Parent’s goal. The Owls doubled their advantage when Higgins headed a ball into the net off of a corner kick from Robert Allan in the 25 th minute.

Prior to that second goal, Lincoln had an excellent chance to tie the game. Sophomore forward Peter Jarbo turned and fired a hard shot into the chest of Owl keeper Scott Clency. The Lions perked up in the final 10 minutes of the first half. They were keeping possession and firing shots, but they could not get anything past Clency.

Lincoln opened the second half by putting pressure on UMPI. In finishing with 15 shots, Lincoln generated nine shots after intermission. The Lions had a pair of golden opportunities to get on the board in the second half. Jarbo fired a shot wide of an untended net from about 10 feet out. Then, freshman Rahsaan Lisimba’s point-blank shot was stopped by Clency.

Clency made seven saves for UMPI, which got a team-high five shots from Allan.

Meanwhile for Lincoln, which dropped to 3-1 on Saturday’s, it was shutout for the fourth time this year and second time in its last four games. The Lions have lost three of four games since beginning the season with a 7-2 record. Lincoln senior keeper Kyle Wanamaker made nine saves. Jarbo led Lincoln with four shots while senior Oluwafemi Badejo and Lisimba added three shots each.
