St. Joe’s defeats Russell Sage in Semi-final #1

STANDISH, MAINE – #1 seed Saint Joseph's College advanced to the title game of the DIII Independents Northeast Women’s Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory over Russell Sage College (7-4-6).  St. Joe’s (11-6) will take on the winner of #2 Meredith College vs. #3 Green Mountain College game tomorrow at 1:30.

The Monks struck early as senior tri-captain Kerri Driscoll (Surry, ME) delivered a perfect pass to first year Heather Stanger (Rockport, MA) for a shot to the upper right corner of the goal just 8 minutes into the match.

St. Joe’s weathered a scare in the 23rd minute as junior Krista Wotherspoon (New Gloucester, MA) came out to challenge a shot by first year Alex Adams (Saratoga Springs, NY) and sophomore midfielder Allison Walton (Meredith, NH) made a tremendous defensive play for the save.

First year Megan Willette scored her 23rd goal of the season in the 70th minute, losing her defender and making the most of a difficult angle to beat keeper sophomore Schuyler Kokernak (Watervliet, NY).

Schuyler recorded 3 saves for the Gators while Wotherspoon had 2 for the Monks.

Russell Sage plays at 11:00 am tomorrow in the consolation game.
