Saint Joe’s Women Capture D3 Independent Championship

STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College women’s basketball team played its best basketball during the final week of the season and used the momentum to earn back to back D3 Independent Championship plaques.

Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) equaled her season high of 15 points and added 10 rebounds as #3 St. Joe’s defeated #1 Maine Presque Isle, 60-39 in the championship game at the Alfond Center. First year Alyson Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) scored 13 points and grabbed 10 boards to go with her 4 steals and two assists.

The first half was marked by several lead changes until a 10-0 run over the final five minutes gave St. Joe’s a 29-19 advantage going into the break. The Monks (10-16) forced 11 turnovers and held the Lady Owls to just 17.4% from the floor in the half.

Maine Presque Isle (17-7) came out strong to start the second stanza as first year Johanna Bubar (Riverview, NB) scored 6 of her nine points in the first four minutes and senior Sarah Beasley (Houlton, ME) added a jumper to cut the lead to 2. Farrell scored for SJC at 15:26 to go up 31-27.

The Lady Owls threatened again, cutting the lead to 3 after a lay-up by junior Leah Joy (Swans Island, ME) at 11:58 but would get no closer as the Monks outscored them 25-7 over the final 10 minutes of play.

St. Joe’s seniors Danielle Somma (Gray, ME) and Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) closed out their careers with tremendous performances. Somma scored a career-high 15 points with 6 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals and earned the tournament MVP award. Regula dominated the boards with 13 rebounds and dished out 7 assists to go along with 2 steals and 2 points and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Sarah Beasley led Maine Presque Isle with 11 points, 7 boards, 5 assists and two steals and was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Jessica Cyr (Caribou, ME) who had 5 points and 3 boards.
