MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MARK WASHINGTON
New Jersey City University
Junior | Guard / Forward | East Orange, NJ / West Side HS

In his first two games of the season after sitting out the first semester, New Jersey City University junior swingman Mark Washington showed no rust and demonstrated why he will be an All-America candidate in Division III. Washington averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while shooting .481, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the College of Staten Island Tournament of Heroes. For his play, Washington is the Association of Division III Independents Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

In his first game of the year on December 28, Washington scored 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, with seven assists, five rebounds and three steals in 34 minutes as the Gothic Knights recorded an 86-80 first round win over Clark University (MA). In the tournament finals on December 29, he added 10 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes. In that victory, which gave NJCU the championship of the CSI Tournament, the Knights crushed Staten Island on its own floor, 92-60, in a game where NJCU led by 42. That win avenged an 84-76 loss to Staten Island on December 11 without Washington in the lineup.
