MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KYLE MYRICK
Lincold University (PA)
Junior | Guard | Philadelphia, PA / Overbrook HS

For the first time since 1994, Lincoln University (PA) won a tournament title, and junior guard Kyle Myrick, deserves much of the credit. After averaging 26.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game while shooting .660 from the field and .909 from the line, Myrick is the Association of Division III Men’s Basketball co-Player of the Week. He also collected ECAC Division III Southern Player of the Week honors. Lincoln is 9-4, has won four straight, and is off to its best mark after 13 games since the 1993-94 team opened the season with a 10-3 record.

The Most Valuable Player of the Moravian College Greyhound Classic, he scored 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting (.650), and was .800 from the line (4-5) with four rebounds and three assists, as the Lions defeated Kean University (8-4), 82-74 in the championship game. The title was Lincoln’ first in the regular season since winning the Potsdam State (NY) tournament in 1994.
In the first round on January 8, Lincoln toppled hosted Moravian College (4-9), 92-78, as Myrick notched 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, while shooting .730 (11-15), missing a triple-double by one board. In a regular season game on January 6, Lincoln defeated Lehman College (8-5), 84-77, as Myrick tallied 23 points (9-15, .600), and added six rebounds and four steals. While playing in all 120 minutes logged by his team this week, his only blemish was 6.3 turnovers per game. Still, he has made up for any miscues, by averaging 25.7 points per game.

MARK WASHINGTON

After averaging 21.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game while shooting .500 from the floor and .714 at the line, New Jersey City University junior swingman Mark Washington is the Association of Division III Men’s Basketball co-Player of the Week, after claiming the honor outright last Monday. As NJCU competed in two tournaments last week, he posted double-doubles in three of NJCU’s four games, and was named to the All-Tournament team in both events. He also collected ECAC Division III Metro Player of the Week and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Men’s Honor Roll accolades.

On January 9 in the championship game of the Lebanon Valley College/Dr. George “Rinso” Marquette Tournament, Washington was the high man in three categories, as he registered 26 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists before NJCU fell at the buzzer in overtime to #22 ranked LVC (10-1), 75-73.

In the opening round on January 8, he added 18 points and 11 rebounds, while shooting 6-of-10, and 5-of-7 at the line, and contributed four assists and four steals as NJCU routed FDU-Florham (6-6), 78-56.

An All-Tournament selection at the 2005 Christopher Newport University Point Plaza Suites/Captains Shootout, he scored 23 points, while shooting 10-of-11 overall, a rate of .909 from the field. He added four assists, four rebounds, and three steals, as NJCU crushed Rutgers-Camden (2-11), 103-67.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

AMANDA BRECHT
University of California - Santa Cruz

After averaging a near double-double in three games and leading UC-Santa Cruz to its first two wins of the season, senior forward Amanda Brecht is the Association of Division III Independents co-Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

In three games, she averaged 12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game, while shooting .540 from the field (13-24) and .800 from the line (12-15).

Brecht recorded her second double-double of the year on January 6, as UCSC surprised New Jersey City University, 51-38, behind her 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists, while shooting 4-of-8 (.500) and 4-for-4 from the line. It was the Banana Slugs (2-14) first win at home since February 2003. In a 63-55 win over Notre Dame de Namur, she collected her third double-double, with 10 points (4-9), 10 rebounds, and three blocks. She chipped in 16 points (5-7, .714), seven rebounds, and five steals, in a close 52-45 loss to Dominican University, the No. 12 ranked NAIA Division II school in the nation.

 

GAYLE SONODA
Chapman University
Senior | Point Guard | Brea, CA / Rosary HS

Chapman University is 14-2, and winners of 10 consecutive games. The Panthers success continued this week due to the stellar ball distribution of senior point guard Gayle Sonoda, who has been selected as the Association of Division III Independents co-Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

In a 3-0 week for Chapman, Sonoda averaged 7.7 assists per game, to go along with 7.3 points, and she shot .500 from the field (6-12) and .714 at the line (10-14). Impressively, she gave out 23 assists, yet only committed three turnovers, a ratio of nearly 8:1.

As Chapman squeaked out a 52-51 win over LaVerne, she dished eight assists with only one turnover in 23 minutes. In an 82-67 triumph against Cal Lutheran, Sonoda delivered seven assists, scored eight points, and had only two turnovers. She wrapped up the week with an 11-point, eight-assist showing against Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ (7-4), and did not commit a turnover as the Panthers prevailed 68-52. She is averaging 4.1 assists per game for the season. Her two eight-assist games are season highs, while her 23 assists in a three-game stretch matches a career-high.
