MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MARK WASHINGTON
New Jersey City University
Junior | Guard/Forward | East Orange, NJ / West Side HS

If NJCU is going to make the 2005 NCAA Tournament, the play of junior swingman Mark Washington will certainly be why. In a 2-0 week for the Gothic Knights (12-6), who have won four straight and 8-of-10 since Washington played his first game of the season on December 28, he averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game. He is the Association of Division III Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season.

In a game featuring two of the top independent teams in the nation, NJCU trailed Lincoln by 10 with 1:41 remaining in the second half on January 29. However, Washington hit two of the Gothic Knights four three-pointers to force overtime, including the tying shot with nine seconds left, as NJCU held off Lincoln University (PA), 76-70, in a thriller. He also hit the go-ahead shot in overtime, finishing with 19 points (7-18) including 3-of-8 from three-point range, and added eight assists and four blocks in 41 minutes. The win also snapped Lincoln’s six-game winning streak.

When NJCU improved to 52-4 all-time against Rutgers-Newark with a 68-61 road win on Wednesday, January 26, Washington led the Knights with his fourth double-double in nine games, finishing with 15 points (6-13), 10 rebounds (five offensive), five assists, and four steals in 34 minutes.
