Sample named Association of Division III Independents baseball Player of the Week KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lincoln University ( Pa.) senior pitcher Matt Sample (West Grove, Pa.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents baseball Player of the Week. During a 4-1 week for the Lions, Sample compiled a 2-0 record with an earned run average of 0.54. In addition, he recorded a save a struck out 24 batters in three appearances. Sample struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits as Lincoln defeated Lancaster Bible 1-0. It was Sample’s third shutout of the season. The save came in the opening game of the Lancaster Bible doubleheader. Sample concluded the week with a complete-game 11-strikeout, three-hit effort in a 13-3 win over Christendom College. Behind the senior hurler, Lincoln (11-10) has established a school record for wins in a season. At the plate, Sample batted .538 with seven hits, including four doubles. He also recorded five steals in Lincoln’s 14-9 win over Christendom. Lincoln is coached by Doug Thompson.

Starkey receives Association of Division III Independents softball Player of the Week awardKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Nebraska Wesleyan University sophomore third baseman Erin Starkey (Grand Island, Neb.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents softball Player of the Week. Starkey accounted for the winning runs in a pair of victories against Hastings College on April 2. In game one, NWU trailed 2-0 until Starkey’s three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning. Hastings rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Starkey put the Prairie Wolves ahead to stay in the eighth with an RBI single that gave NWU the 4-3 win. In game two, Nebraska Wesleyan led 3-0 when Starkey hit her fourth home run of the year to give her team a 4-0 advantage. It proved to be the winning run as NWU held on to win 5-3. For the week, Starkey was 3-for-7 (.429) with two home runs and five RBI as NWU improved to 9-1 overall. For the season, Starkey, who is coached by Lance Kingery, is 15-for-31 (.484) with 15 RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.000.

Aldrich named Association of Division III Independents men’s track and field Athlete of the WeekKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Nebraska Wesleyan University senior sprinter Jeff Aldrich (Seward , Neb.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents men’s track and field Athlete of the Week. Aldrich won the 200-meter dash in 22.20 and helped the 4x100-meter relay team finish first in a time of 42.04 at the Neil Moore Classic on April 1 in Blair, Neb. Aldrich is coached by Ted Bulling.

Powell receives Association of Division III Independents women’s track and field Athlete of the Week awardKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Nebraska Wesleyan University senior long jumper Erin Powell (Beaver City, Neb.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s track and field Athlete of the Week. Powell shattered her career best and qualified automatically for the NCAA Div. III Outdoor Championships with her winning long jump of 19’6” at the Neil Moore Classic held in Blair, Neb on April 1. Powell’s mark fell just 1.75 inches short of Kim Oden’s school record. Powell is coached by Ted Bulling.
