MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

     UC-Santa Cruz is 8-0 overall, and ranked No. 2 in Division III in men's soccer by the NSCAA, and a rookie has played a major role in the Slugs success. Freshman striker Alex Mandel is the Association of Division III Independents men's soccer Player of the Week after playing a role in both goals as the Slugs upended Chapman University , 2-1, in overtime on September 19. After giving Santa Cruz a 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season by heading in a cross, he assisted on the game-winning goal for UCSC in the fifth minute of the extra session. He leads the team in goals and points (13), and has helped the Slugs to their best start in school history, and a No. 1 ranking in the West Region.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Caitlin Carpenter provided all of the offense for UC-Santa Cruz in two out-of-state road victories, including an upset of a Top 10 ranked opponent, and has been named the Association of Division III Independents women's soccer Player of the Week, as the Slugs ( 5-2-1 ) sweep the weekly soccer awards. Carpenter notched three goals in three games for UCSC. In a 1-0 upset of No. 10 ranked Williamette University in Salem , Oregon on September 17, she tallied the game's only goal 23 minutes into the contest, as UCSC prevailed 1-0. The upset ended Williamette's 74-game home unbeaten streak that had lasted more than seven seasons. Two days later, she scored two unassisted goals for the Slugs in a 2-1 double-overtime triumph against Linfield College in McMinnville , OR . She originally gave UCSC a 1-0 lead in the 31 st minute, before notching the game-winner in the 100th minute.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nicole Brandt-Young of California State University-East Bay is the Association of Division III Independents Player of the Week as the Pioneers, ranked #6 in Division III, remained perfect, with a 14-0 record, including four victories last week at the Claremont-Mudd Invitational. She averaged 3.2 kills, 1.4 blocks, 1.2 digs, and 1.1 services aces per game for East Bay , while hitting for a .429 attack percentage. In a 3-0 sweep of Chapman University on September 17, she hit .391 with 11 kills, six digs, three blocks, and two aces. Brandt-Young was errorless at the net in a sweep of Pomona-Pitzer, landing 11 kills (11-0-16) and hitting .688, with two blocks. She nearly had a triple-double in a 3-0 win against host Claremont-Mudd, with eight kills (.300 percentage), seven blocks, and six aces. Overall, she recorded 32 kills, 14 blocks, and 11 aces in 10 games over the four matches.
