Murphy receives Association of Division III Independents women’s cross country Runner of the Week honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of California-Santa Cruz freshman Mikayla Murphy (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) is this week’s Association of Division III Independents women’s cross country Runner of the Week. After breaking the UCSC 5K school record in her race last week, Murphy once again broke another record in this week’s race. She broke the UCSC 6K record by 30 seconds in a time of 22:36, placing third at the Gator Invite in San Francisco.

 

Smarte earns Association of Division III Independents men’s soccer Player of the Week award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of California-Santa Cruz senior midfielder/forward Adam Smarte (Monrovia, Liberia) is this week’s Association of Division III Independents men’s soccer Player of the Week. Smarte led the Slugs to two victories in as many days this weekend with a pair of opening goals against Cal State East bay and Menlo, respectively. Scoring his fourth and fifth goals of the year, Smarte moved into third in scoring on the team. The Slugs picked up their 10th and 11th wins of the season, giving them an 11-3-0 overall record.

 

Collier receives Association of Division III Independents women’s soccer Player of the Week honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Salem College sophomore forward Tori Collier (Raleigh, N.C.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s soccer Player of the Week. Collier helped the Spirits to their 11th straight win in a 5-0 victory over Huntingdon College, the team’s sixth shutout of the year. She assisted on a pair of goals and netted two goals herself in the second half to help her team improve to 11-0-1 overall.

 

Fuentes named Association of Division III Independents volleyball Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of Dallas freshman libero Kelli Fuentes (Rowlett, Texas) has been selected as the Association of Division III Independents volleyball Player of the Week. Fuentes was named to the All-Tournament team at the Roanoke Maroon Classic that ran Oct. 6-7. For the weekend, she accumulated 88 digs (5.18 per game) and made only three reception errors in 132 attempts. Fuentes played a fundamental role in handing tournament champion University of Mary Washington their lone defeat on the weekend with 29 digs and zero reception errors in 48 tries. UD also defeated 2006 NCAA tournament participant Mary Baldwin College, aided by 27 digs from Fuentes. The first-year libero leads the team in digs on the season with 435 (4.72 per game) and has only committed 36 reception errors all year.

The Association of Division III Independents Player of the Week awards program begins on September 3, 2007 and is based on nominations from the organization's member schools.
