ONLY three schools submitted nominations this week for weekly honors… New Jersey City , Cal State East Bay , and St. Scholastica . There were no women's soccer nominees and only one men's soccer nomination. It would be great to honor athletes from other schools, but we need nominations for that to happen.
CHRIS ROSENTHAL In a 2-0 week for New Jersey City University in which the club outscored its opponents, 17-0, junior striker CHRIS ROSENTHAL is the Association of Division III Independents Men's Soccer Player of the Week for week six of 2004 season. The striker scored five goals for 10 points in two games, while notching the game-winner in the first minute of action in both of NJCU's victories. He is the second NJCU forward to earn Player of the Week this season. NJCU (10-5) is the No. 4 scoring offense in the nation. Rosenthal , also named the ECAC Division III Metro Player of the Week, scored often and early— very early. In a 7-0 thumping of Mount Saint Mary College on the road on October 13, Rosenthal posted a natural hat-trick, including the game-winner just 23 seconds into the contest. It was the fastest goal to start a game in school history, eclipsing the record of 29 seconds. He only played the game's first 32 minutes as NJCU built a comfortable 4-0 half-time lead behind his abilities. On Saturday, October 16, in a 10-0 trouncing of Medgar Evers College , he scored his 15th and 16th goals of the season in the early portion of the first half as NJCU outshot its opponent, 50-7. He only played the game's first 30 minutes as NJCU again possessed a 4-0 halftime edge. He is two goals and four points shy of tying the single-season mark for goals (18) and points (39). Rosenthal has paced the NJCU offense, which has scored 61 goals in 15 games and is on pace to break the 2001 clubs' single-season record of 72 goals.

NICOLE BRANDT-YOUNG California State East Bay is 23-0 and remains one of two unbeaten teams in Division III, and the Pioneers have received solid play all year from senior outside hitter Nicole Brandt-Young . She is the Association of Division III Independents Women's Volleyball co-Player of the Week, marking the second time this season she has been honored. The Most Valuable Player of the Cal State East Bay tournament—an event with three Top 25 teams— she recorded 42 kills, 11 blocks, 10 aces and a .359 hitting percentage. She averaged 3.23 kills, 0.84 blocks, and 0.77 aces per game. In the Pioneers' 3-1 win over #5 University of LaVerne , Brandt-Young hit .400 with 14 kills. In a 3-0 victory against #12 Central College , she recorded 11 kills and rejected four blocks. She also had 11 kills ( 11-1-24 ), hit .417, and added five aces and three blocks in a sweep of Ithaca College , one of the top teams in the New York Region.
LIZZELLE CINTRON In a week where the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team went 6-0, won a record 10 th consecutive match to improve to 20-5 overall, and claimed the championship of the 11 th Annual Gothic Knight Invitational, freshman middle blocker Lizzelle Cintron, the NCAA Division III leader in kills per game by a staggering margin, is the Association of Division III Independents Women's Volleyball co-Player of the Week. It's the fourth time this season and the third week in a row, she has been honored. Cintron has also taken NJCU somewhere it's never been before—to the championship of the 11th Annual Gothic Knight Invitational. Cintron was the obvious choice for Most Valuable Player honors and was also named to the All-Tournament team as she led NJCU to the championship of its own eight-team tournament on October 16 for the first time ever, after being in the finals in the past two years. In a perfect 6-0 week for the red-hot Gothic Knights, Cintron had 117 kills in 200 swings (117-21-200) and hit a mind-boggling .480. She added 92 digs on defense, and totaled 144.5 points, 14 blocks (13 solo), 14 aces and 15 assists. Her averages were 6.16 kills, 7.61 points, 4.84 digs, 0.74 blocks, 0.74 aces and 0.79 assists in 19 games over six matches. In the championship match of the tournament, Cintron blasted 30 of her 89 kills on the day and had six blocks and 36.5 points as NJCU avenged a September loss to powerful FDU-Florham and easily defeated the Devils, 3-1. In the match, Cintron hammered her 524th kill of the season to break the single-season school record of 523. She now has 541 with at least nine regular season matches left. The 30 kills give her five matches this season of 30 or more kills. She hit at least .500 in NJCU's five other matches during the week.
