MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHRIS ROSENTHAL
New Jersey City University
Junior | Forward | Kearny , NJ / Kearny HS

Chris Rosenthal has been among the most dominant offensive players in the nation this year, and in a week in which he scored six goals and added five assists for 17 points, while leading New Jersey City University to its first-ever post-season championship in soccer, he is this year’s final Association of Division III Independents Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. It is the second time this year he has been honored.

On November 14, Rosenthal scored his 25th goal of the season and added two assists as No. 2 seeded NJCU defeated fifth-seeded Manhattanville College, 3-1, in the championship game of the 2004 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Tournament. Rosenthal was the obvious choice as the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament for the Gothic Knights (17-7), who tied the single-season school record for victories. NJCU won all three of its ECAC games at home, and combined to outscore its opponents, 15-2 in the three-game span. NJCU was one goal shy of the tournament record of 16 that Stevens Institute compiled when it won the 2002 crown.

When the Knights blanked Ramapo College, 3-0, in the semifinals on November 13, he notched his 23rd and 24th goals of the season.
On November 10, the Knights routed FDU-Florham, 9-1, in the ECAC Quarterfinals. The nine goals were the second most ever scored in any post-season game in Division III history, only one shy of the record of 10 in the 1974 NCAA Tournament. In that game, Rosenthal scored three goals and had three assists to eclipse the 50-point threshold for the season. He tied the single-game school record with nine points.

He finished the year with 25 goals and nine assists for 59 points. The goals and points both obliterated the previous single-season records of 18 goals and 39 points. He is third in the nation in goals and fourth in total points.
