Scheer, Curcio Named Association of Division III Independents

Student-Athletes of the Month Award Winners for April

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Lisa Scheer, a freshman pitcher/third baseman for St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) softball team, and Lou Curcio, a junior pitcher/first baseman for the Lancaster Bible College baseball team, were named today as the recipients of the Association of Division III Independents Student-Athletes of the Month award for April 2009.

The Lady Bears went 20-3 in the month of April, largely in part to the outstanding all-around play of Scheer.  She compiled a .354 batting average (23-for-65) and a .569 slugging percentage to lead all Lady Bears, as well as had a home run, three triples and five doubles, scoring 20 runs and driving in 15.  In the circle, Scheer posted a 10-1 record with a 1.26 earned run average in 72 innings of work.  The freshman ace tossed three shutouts, and struck out 78 while issuing only 10 walks.  In the field, Scheer was perfect in 51 attempts that included 12 put-outs and 39 assists.  Scheer also received the AD3I Player of the Week honors for the week ending April 26, when she went 3-0 including a one-hit, seven-inning, shutout over New York University where she struck out 11 and walked one.

Curcio helped the Chargers to an 11-8 record in the month of April, including a NCCAA East Region title and a trip to the National Tournament.  On the mound, he pitched 45.2 innings, giving up 48 hits and 23 earned runs.  Curcio struck out 37 batters and walked only seven.  He recorded three wins, two saves and three complete games.  At the plate, Curcio batted .349 with 15 runs scored, 22 hits, 15 runs batted in and four home runs.

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2008-09.  The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.  The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports.  In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of nine sports this year.

All competing student-athletes from the Association’s 17 members were eligible for the award.  Each school was allowed to nominate its top performing male and female student-athletes from April.  The award recipients were selected after a vote of the Association’s Student-Athlete Recognition Committee.
