Rosa Named Association of Division III Independents Student-Athlete of the Month Award Winner for May
KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Mary Rosa, a sophomore driver for the California State University, East Bay women’s water polo team, was named today as the recipient of the Association of Division III Independents Student-Athlete of the Month award for May 2009. During the May 1-3 Collegiate III Women's Water Polo Championships, Rosa led the Pioneers with 14 goals in five matches. She tallied six goals in a 16-6 victory over Washington and Jefferson. In the fifth place match against Washington and Jefferson, Rosa scored three goals in the 12-5 Pioneer victory. She was named to the All-Tournament Second Team. During the month of May, Rosa was named to the Collegiate III Academic All-America team. She was the leading scorer for the Pioneers during the 2009 season with 89 goals. The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2008-09. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports. In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of nine sports this year. All competing student-athletes from the Association’s 17 members were eligible for the award. Each school was allowed to nominate its top performing male and female student-athletes from May. The award recipients were selected after a vote of the Association’s Student-Athlete Recognition Committee.
