Dow, Murphy Named Association of Division III Independents

Student-Athlete of the Month Award Winners for December

 

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Basketball student-athletes Shenika Dow of Southern Vermont College and Elbie Murphy of Saint Joseph’s College (Maine), were named today as the recipients of the Association of Division III Independents Student-Athlete of the Month awards for December. 

Dow, a sophomore from Raleigh, NC, averaged 22.2 points, eight rebounds and five steals per game during three December contests.  And despite playing with a starting lineup that includes four freshmen, Dow ranks fourth among all AD3I scorers with 18.3 points per game and ranks second with 4.15 steals per game. 

Murphy, a sophomore from Loudonville, NY, averaged 10 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals during the month.  Murphy also dished out 19 assists and blocked eight shots in six games, four of which were victories.

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 25 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2006-07.  The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.  The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports.  In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of nine sports this year. 

All competing student-athletes from the Association’s 25 members were eligible for the award.  Each school was allowed to nominate its top performing male and female student-athletes from December.  The award recipients were selected after a vote of the Association’s Student-Athlete Recognition Committee.
