Chappell, Boggs Named Association of Division III Independents

Student-Athlete of the Month Award Winners for November

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Catherine Chappell, a forward on the Milwaukee School of Engineering basketball team, and Julian Boggs, a cross country runner from Colorado College, were named today as the recipients of the Association of Division III Independents Student-Athlete of the Month awards for November.

Chappell, an electrical engineering major from Lemont, IL, averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds during six November contests where the Raiders went 2-4.  A co-captain who ranked 14th in the nation in scoring last year, Chappell was voted to the All-Tournament team at the Lakeland College Play with Grace tournament.

Boggs became a two-time All-American in cross country when he finished third at the 2006 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.  A native of Berea, KY, Boggs finished his third-place run at the championship despite having to run most of the event barefoot.  Just after the start, an opposing runner accidentally stepped on one of Boggs’ shoes and knocked it off.  After stopping to take off the other shoe, Boggs posted a time of 26.44.  Boggs won the NCAA West Region Championship with a personal best time of 24:32.  It was the third consecutive event he finished in first place and his sixth consecutive top-three finish this season.

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 25 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2006-07.  The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.  The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports.  In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of nine sports this year.

All competing student-athletes from the Association’s 25 members were eligible for the award.  Each school was allowed to nominate its top performing male and female student-athletes from November.  The award recipients were selected after a vote of the Association’s Student-Athlete Recognition Committee.
