Kavanagh, Cavan Named Association of Division III Independents

Student-Athlete of the Month Award Winners for April

 

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Utility player Carol Jeanne Kavanagh of St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) and shortstop Ryan Cavan of Chapman University were named today as the recipients of the Association of Division III Independents Student-Athlete of the Month awards for April.

 

Kavanagh, a senior from Queens, NY, led the Lady Bears to a 17-7 record for the month of April, which included an appearance in the USCAA National Tournament and a third straight Hudson Valley Athletic Conference regular-season title.  The co-captain had a .537 batting average, a slugging percentage of .890 and an on-base percentage of .563.  She collected 17 doubles, three triples and two home runs.  Kavanagh also drove in 40 runs, had 13 stolen bases and scored 31 runs. 

 

Kavanagh also was the recipient of the association’s player-of-the-week award for April 16-23 when she had an impressive 22 runs batted in while batting .720 and slugging 1.240.

 

Cavan, a sophomore entrepreneurship major from Belmont, CA, hit .462 (18-for-39) for Chapman, ranked No. 2 in Division III.  Cavan hit safely in all but one game in April; he went 0-for-1 with three walks in that contest.   Cavan collected six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 12 runs batted in.  He committed just one error in 59 chances (.983 fielding percentage), helping Chapman to a 10-1 record during the month.

  

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 25 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2006-07.  The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.  The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports.  In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of nine sports this year. 

 

All competing student-athletes from the Association’s 25 members were eligible for the award.  Each school was allowed to nominate its top performing male and female student-athletes from April.  The award recipients were selected after a vote of the Association’s Student-Athlete Recognition Committee.
