Nebraska Wesleyan went on the road and upset #13 Hastings College 75-70 in GPAC men's basketball action to extend their winning streak to four games.
NWU, which trailed 14-0 to start the game, improves to 13-9 overall and 8-9 in GPAC play. It is the fourth straight season that NWU defeats Hastings on their home court and marks the first time in eight seasons under Coach Schuknect that NWU beat a ranked team on the road.
The Prairie Wolves built up a 10-point lead in the second half before the 13th-ranked Broncos pulled back within one point.
With the Prairie Wolves leading 73-70 and under a minute to play, NWU held down to the final seconds of the shot clock. Trey Bardsley attempted a running layup in the paint but it didn't fall giving Hastings the ball. On the other end of the floor, the Broncos got the ball to Brett Wells for a jumper from the top of the key but he shot an airball. Bardsley got the rebound and went on the other end to convert both free throws and seal the win.
In the second half, the tough NWU defense forced Hastings to shoot only 25.7 percent in the second half. They finished the game at 36.9 percent.
It was the Trey Bardsley show for the fourth straight game as he paced the Prairie Wolves in scoring. Bardsley had a game-high 21 points hitting 3-5 from 3-point range.
Two other NWU players scored in double figures for NWU as Trevor Johnson scored 13 points and Eric Jackson scored 11. Tim Schweitzer had nine points, all in the second half, and pulled down nine rebounds.
Jake Hamburger led Hastings with 20 points.
NWU now returns home to face the top team in the GPAC as they host #3 Dordt College on Saturday afternoon.
