Merchant Marine Outlasts New Rochelle Basketball

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The College of New Rochelle had its two game win streak halted this afternoon, falling to US Merchant Marine Academy, 73-59, at the Wellness Center. 
 
Jah-Leah Ellis paced three Blue Angels is double figures with 16 points, adding  a game-high 14 rebounds to tally her 11th double-double of the season.  Jasmine Brandontotaled 14 points and nine rebounds while Alyssa Pechin chipped in with 10 points.
 
Demi VanDerWal led all scorers with 21 points to lead the Mariners.
 
After the two sides traded baskets to open the game, Merchant Marine reeled off five straight points and maintained the lead for the remainder of the opening stanza, taking 10 point leads on two occasions before heading into the break leading, 34-28.
 
CNR opened the second half with a 12-4 run, capped by two Pechin free throws with 15:47 remaining, to take its only lead of the game.  The Mariners responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead and led by 12, 62-50, with just over four minutes left before the Blue Angels attempted a comeback.  CNR outscored Merchant Marine, 7-1 over the next two minutes to pull with six at 63-57 with two minutes left, but drew no closer.
